Crews called out to at least one road traffic collision every day

Between 1st January and 31st October 2025, our critical care paramedics and doctors were called out to 332 road traffic collisions. That works out at more than one every day.

We have revealed the figures ahead of Road Safety Week (16th – 22nd November), urging road users in the region to prioritise safety on every journey.

One passionate advocate for the importance of road safety is Stephanie Thorp, who was involved in a head-on collision at 50 miles-per-hour in 2023. A Thames Valley Air Ambulance critical care paramedic and doctor crew were soon on scene, performing the highest level of pre-hospital care.

Thanks to Thames Valley Air Ambulance, I ’ve been given the chance to grow old.

Stephanie was quickly anaesthetised and the crew intubated Stephanie at the roadside, inserting a tube into her trachea to maintain an open airway.

With multiple open fractures, Stephanie needed urgent blood transfusions, which the crew started straight away. A second Thames Valley Air Ambulance vehicle brought further much-needed blood to the scene and Stephanie received eight units in total. This would have essentially replaced almost all the blood in Stephanie’s body.

Stephanie Thorp, former patient of Thames Valley Air Ambulance, said:

“On paper, I shouldn’t have recovered so well. I’m incredibly lucky that Thames Valley Air Ambulance managed my injuries from the start, stopping loss of oxygen to the brain and sedating me to prevent further damage.

“It’s because of these people that I am still here. My son still has a mum. My husband still has a wife. Thanks to Thames Valley Air Ambulance, I ’ve been given the chance to grow old.”

As well as championing road safety, Stephanie is fronting our Christmas Raffle. Entering the Christmas Raffle is easy, and tickets are just £1 each. Players could win one of 100 amazing prizes, including an incredible first prize of £5,000 and a second prize of £1,000.

Amanda McLean, Chief Executive of Thames Valley Air Ambulance, said:

“After such a life-changing incident, Stephanie has made incredible progress and we’re so pleased for her. We’re very grateful to her for lending her voice to help us not only raise awareness of road safety but also raise funds for our lifesaving charity.

“As a charity, every mission we attend is funded by the generosity of the public. Playing the Christmas Raffle gives you the chance to win big, but it could also give someone like Stephanie the chance to grow old.”
