Dr John Gaffney

Dr John Gaffney is newly appointed as a trustee for Thames Valley Air Ambulance.  He is the Medical Director for Save the Children International, based in London.

John is leading the development and implementation of a clinical governance framework to underpin the quality and safety of clinical activities in Save the Children’s health programs in over 50 countries. John is an experienced GP and medical leader. He is a graduate of St Andrews and Manchester and completed vocational training in general practice in Manchester before working in Australia for 2 years as a GP, hospital physician and flying doctor.  

On returning to England, he joined the RAF and served for 25 years as a medical officer, of which his final three years were in the role of Inspector General for the UK Defence Medical Services. His penultimate role as Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for RAF Medical Operations included management of the helicopter mounted forward casualty recovery teams (MERT: Medical Emergency Response Teams) during their busiest period in Afghanistan.  

He has special interests in patient safety, clinical governance, health informatics, air ambulance services and aviation medicine.

Sarah Roberts

Sarah Roberts started work life in the NHS as a dentist, but had a dramatic career change to marketing and the charity sector over 15 years ago. She is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees at Pancreatic Cancer UK. Sarah lives in Bucks and can usually be found pottering in her garden or walking in the wonderful local hills and woods in her spare time.
