News and Media Blog A Volunteer's Story - Carey Ballard On International Volunteer Day we speak to one of our most dedicated volunteer who has given up her time since she had a personal involvement with Thames Valley Air Ambulance. Here are her own words. Hi, I'm Carey Ballard. I have been a volunteer for a couple of years now. It all started after my daughter, Charlotte had a car accident and was airlifted by Thames Valley Air Ambulance. Mostly I love attending different shows and talking informally - having a personal story really engages people. I feel very proud to put on my volunteer uniform and do my little bit to raise awareness about the charity. I have also had the privilege of meeting some amazing people, not only the medical professionals and the TVAA team but also the lovely volunteers that I have worked alongside. A few months after Charlotte’s accident we met the paramedics who saved her life, Rich and Clive. That special reunion the Charity arranged was pivotal to Charlottes recovery. They still all support her to this day for which we are very grateful. I decided I wanted to try and give something back to the TVAA, so earlier this year I applied to the London Marathon ballot...and last month I found out that I had won a place! It's a massive challenge, especially as I am not a runner! After freaking out for a couple of weeks, I realised the enormity of it all and started my training. It's going okay but I still have a lot of work to do! Check out my JustGiving page, read my story and if you can, please sponsor me! Volunteer Fundraising Manager, Katie Whelpdale, has this message for anyone inspired by Carey's story. "Volunteers like Carey make our charity work. Without her and around 100 other volunteers we would not be able to fundraise and spread awareness across our three counties. We are always looking for more volunteers to help out – whether you can spare an hour a month or more we would love to hear from you." Give back to your air ambulance over this festive period.
